Tips on Buying Fish | How to Choose Fresh Fish

When buying fish, it is important to ensure that the fish is fresh and properly handled. Aged fish can breed bacteria and accumulate toxins that poses health threats. Knowing what to look for makes buying fresh fish easy.  Here are tips to help you out:

  • Check the eyes.  Look for bright, clear eyes. The eyes fade quickly into gray dullness as it loses freshness.  If the eyes appear milky, cloudy, faded or dull, the fish is probably several days old and nearing its expiration date.
  • Look at the scales and skin of the fish.  The scales should be bright and look metallic and clean. Look out for missing scales, dried out skin, or presence of discolored patches. Fresh fish should appear moist and firm. The tail of the fish should also be stiff.
  • Look at the gills. They should be a rich red. Make sure there is no slime present. Dull or brownish gills indicate the fish will start to turn soon.
  • Observe the odor of the fish. Fresh fish should smell like clean water or similar to salt-water or brine. Fish that smells sour, overpowering or rank indicates that it has spoiled or is about to spoil.

We're Sooooooooooooooooooo Back!!!

The year 2011 did not end right for us. But hey! That's over. Just like what we would normally do in every adversity, we simply dust ourselves off and try again.;)

But first, let me take you through a little time travel and revisit our history.

2009
We started operations of our carwash business.

A month after, we started the kan-anan (diner) for the customers of the carwash.

2010
An expansion on the lower deck was built to cater to the growing customer base.

We also had a small area for carwash customers to sit back and relax while waiting for their precious vehicles being pampered out.

2011
In late-2011, the diner area looked like this...

And we added this feature along with a function room and additional carwash bays.
.
.
.

Everything went well until TS Sendong happened on December 17, 2011, and left us with this:

But it's not really something that would keep us from standing up, you know. So here we are again, 2 months after that fateful day, cooking again for you.

Thank you sooooooooooooooooo much!!!

And oh, we have a new phone number. Call us up at (063) 222-4610 for your orders. ;)

Jacko's Supports Project 111111

Jacko's Kan-anan, together with Iligan Bloggers Society, Inc., expresses its support to Project 111111.  We are happy to take part in this effort to collect donations to be given to the less fortunate ones this yuletide season.

The figure stands for ONE CITY making this ONE noble PROJECT, realizing ONE GOAL to extend generous help to the less privileged, working together with ONE HEART for ONE DAY (November 11, 2011), reaching and breaking ONE RECORD at the Guinness Book of World Records.

Project 111111 is a call to donate books, clothing, toys, etc. intended for the less fortunate community in the city.  On November 11, 2011 (11/11/11), all donations from concerned individuals, groups and other entities will be gathered in one area. Clothes will be weighed to possibly beat a world record that would urge others to replicate this noble activity. The collected donations will be for the benefit of people in under-served communities, especially in the rural areas and other locales within or outside Iligan City.

How can YOU join the project?

You can take part by donating, spreading the word, and volunteering.
